I had been following this story line for a while and purchased this 4 book set which was initially described as concluding the saga. (I see that description is now removed from the site.) I don't know if it was the gap in time since I had read the prior book, or a change in the author's style, but this first book felt a little slow and I didn't feel really warmed up and enjoying the pace again until maybe the third book. I could not see how the author was going to conclude the story and, sure enough, after the last page was a note that the author had run out of time and needed one more book to finish the story - Which would be published Sept 3. Please wait and Amazon would be updating this book set to include that last volume. The new book has been available for purchase on Amazon for 3 weeks, but there has been no update pushed to me, or any indication that it will be. I invested myself in the books and purchased this expecting to enjoy the conclusion of the storyline. It may be immature to believe in written statements ('this will finalize the story of...', 'I will have Amazon distribute to you'...), but I rather feel cheated. At long last--Cooper's universe is detailed, endless and has many spin-offs to boot--we reach the end of the Orion War, the 1,000-front war that seems impossible to get a handle on. For awhile, it seems like this finale will go out with a bang, but it eventually goes out with a whimper, which is my only real quibble. That's because it isn't really a finale, but just the prelude to the next series (the Ascension Wars). The ending of the Orion War seems a bit diminished because there is so much focus on the next series.Book 12 is almost like an introduction to Book 13. That's ok, at least since they are bundled together here (I didn't encounter them separately, which might have had a different feel). Then we get to the Big One. Book 13 for most of its long story is action-packed and pulse pounding. How will Cooper end it? I was excited to find out. I can't talk too much about it as I don't want to give spoilers, but it was predictable, went mostly where you thought it would, seemed anti-climatic and then finished abruptly. The earlier twists and turns were great. The finale was straightforward and abrupt, without even a real epilogue. I mean really--after 13 books, not to mention many spin-off adventures that many will have read--there's not a pause for reflection, no regrouping, no celebration. Instead, this ends quickly and makes it clear it is just the prelude to the next phase of Tanis/Tangel's larger war with the Core AIs, who already make many appearances in the books comprising this omnibus, especially Book 13.In advertising, in other words, a great epic is supposedly concluding, but it doesn't feel that way. The underpinnings of the next series (the Ascension Wars) bleed freely into this one. That may really be the issue--the more this book starts up battles with Core AIs, the less Book 13 seems like an ending of any sort, as opposed to just the latest stopping point. A little more elegance and attention could've made this Orion War saga seem more complete on its own, a point where the reader can catch his or her breath rather than just prepare for another arc in the real series. Maybe it just needs to be advertised differently.Still, this was great fun and it's a can't-miss omnibus.
