This was a really good story, easily finished in a single sitting. It's a dark, disturbing, twisted little tale the likes of which I have never read before. I don't even know how to describe this book, but it was a fun read. A truly unique tale that is not for the squeamish. My only complaint is that now I want to know more about this strange diesel-punk world! Nothing about this book was new or unique, but I loved every second of it.The book opens introducing a boy with no name and no idea who (or what) he is. As he is abused by people on the docks (it's not graphic, but it's not pretty), he comes to name himself Johann. As he grows up and navigates life and the city of Elendhaven, he notices a man named Florian, who can seemingly do magic. Johann attempts to rob him one night and winds up working for him.Nothing about this book was nice; every bit was pretty brutal, even the ill fated "romance" between Johann and Florian is filled with abuse and borderline assault. But it's well written.The world was expertly built, but I felt like it could've been longer. I love a short book that's all packed in one, but there was so much to explore here. The religion? The history of Elendhaven? How/why magicians exist in this world? What was actually up with the Hallanroe story?I admit I kinda didn't see the twist coming. And I didn't see Florian wanting to manufacturing a new and even deadlier plague.The ending kinda leaves room for a sequel, and further exploration of the world. It felt a little like Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, a book which I absolutely adored, and I will definitely be looking out for other works from Giesbrecht.
